Pub Day Shout-Outs! for October 26th, 2021, featuring Lan, Obama, Springsteen, and Rivera

by Ashley Dickson-Ellison (@teachingtheapocalypse)

Here are three books coming out today that I'm excited to read!

Book Cover of Jackie Lan's Donut Fall in Love

Jackie Lan's Donut Fall in Love (Amazon | Bookshop.org)

Description from Publisher:

"Actor Ryan Kwok is back in Toronto after the promotional tour for his latest film, a rom-com that is getting less-than-stellar reviews. After years of constant work and the sudden death of his mother, Ryan is taking some much-needed time off. But as he tries to be supportive to his family, he struggles with his loss and doesn't know how to talk to his dad—who now trolls him on Twitter instead of meeting him for dim sum.

"Innovative baker Lindsay McLeod meets Ryan when he knocks over two dozen specialty donuts at her bakery. Their relationship is off to a messy start, but there’s no denying their immediate attraction. When Ryan signs up for a celebrity episode of Baking Fail, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake and she agrees.

"As Lindsay and Ryan spend time together, bonding over grief and bubble tea, it starts to feel like they’re cooking up something sweeter than cupcakes in the kitchen."

Why I want to read it: I love this title and cover, and this premise sounds so fun! I always love romances that involve food, and this one sounds quite promising! I can't wait!

Book Cover of Renegades: Born in the USA by Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen

Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen's Renegades: Born in the USA (Amazon | Bookshop.org)

Description from Publisher:

"Two longtime friends share an intimate and urgent conversation about life, music, and their enduring love of America, with all its challenges and contradictions, in this stunningly produced expansion of their groundbreaking Higher Ground podcast, featuring more than 350 photographs, exclusive bonus content, and never-before-seen archival material.

"Renegades: Born in the USA is a candid, revealing, and entertaining dialogue between President Barack Obama and legendary musician Bruce Springsteen that explores everything from their origin stories and career-defining moments to our country’s polarized politics and the growing distance between the American Dream and the American reality. Filled with full-color photographs and rare archival material, it is a compelling and beautifully illustrated portrait of two outsiders—one Black and one white—looking for a way to connect their unconventional searches for meaning, identity, and community with the American story itself."

Why I want to read it: I am so intrigued by this! I have not yet listened to the podcast that is mentioned here, but I will be checking out those episodes between these two monumental figures soon. And this looks like such an amazing collection. I'd love to read this!

Lilliam Rivera's We Light Up the Sky (Amazon | Bookshop.org)

Description from Publisher:

"Pedro, Luna, and Rafa may attend Fairfax High School together in Los Angeles, but they run in separate spheres. Pedro is often told that he's 'too much' and seeks refuge from his home life in a local drag bar. Luna is pretending to go along with the popular crowd but is still grieving the unexpected passing of her beloved cousin Tasha. Then there's Rafa, the quiet new kid who is hiding the fact that his family is homeless.

"But Pedro, Luna, and Rafa find themselves thrown together when an extraterrestrial visitor lands in their city and takes the form of Luna's cousin Tasha. As the Visitor causes destruction wherever it goes, the three teens struggle to survive and warn others of what's coming--because this Visitor is only the first of many. But who is their true enemy--this alien, or their fellow humans?

"Pura Belpré Honor-winning author Lilliam Rivera examines the days before a War of the Worlds-inspired alien invasion in this captivating and chilling new novel."

Why I want to read it: This sounds like such a fascinating and fast-moving premise, and I love stories that bring together characters in unexpected ways. It also looks like it's perfect for the season!
