Haunting Book Recommendations for the Season

ree

Curated by Ashley Dickson-Ellison (@ashley_dicksonellison) Spooky reading season is officially here, and we want to make sure you have plenty of recs at your fingertips! We often share five specific book reviews for our Friday blog posts, but today I'd like to share a couple of our book reviews as well as a couple of other posts we've written to help you find the perfect reads for spooky season.

If you're hoping to read some atmospheric autumnal reads, you'll find some good choices here.

From Ashley's review: "This novel, which falls in the horror genre but is a pretty light read for its category, is a fascinating and self-reflective look at the iconic aspects of slashers from the golden age of slasher films.

"The protagonist Jade is a bit of an expert when it comes to the details of slasher films, and she knows the ins and outs of the plot arcs as well as the archetypal characters in the slashers... and she realizes as she sees events unfolding around her in her small town of Proofrock that she might very well be living through a real life slasher. As bodies start showing up and as Jade identifies the 'final girl' who will surely be the center of the events, Jade tries to convince others around her that they are experiencing a slasher and that she can guide them through it to try to minimize the loss of life." From Jen's review: "Certain Dark Things is about Atl, a twenty-something Tlāhuihpochtli, a type of matrilineal vampire who can shape shift. After the murder of her family, Atl has fled to Mexico City and is desperate to escape the notice of those who are hunting her. The other main character is Domingo, a garbage picker who catches Atl’s eye and becomes her 'Renfield,' her human servant.

"As Atl and Domingo work their way through a list of people (and vampires) who may be able to help Atl get to safety, they’re pursued by Nick, a Necro vampire, and his own Renfield, Rodrigo, who is doing one last job before he retires. Nick is desperate to capture Atl, who humiliated him, and Rodrigo is charged with keeping Nick safe and helping him to find their nemesis." Click to read the full review.

This compilation from Jen features five different book reviews we've shared about some seasonal favorites we've reviewed here on the blog. Be sure to check out our favorites!

Jen and I also both absolutely loved the two following October book club picks, both of which would be perfect seasonal reads.

Phew, that brilliant book, a retelling of Steven King's Carrie, has really stayed with me. It's masterfully told and the issues at its center couldn't be more timely.

Cañas's Vampires of El Norte, while certainly atmospheric for the season, also has some historical components that are complex and fascinating, and I personally loved the romance at its center as well.

We hope this list helps you find the right picks for your autumn reading.
