5 Must-Read Pop Culture Books to Add to Your Shelf (or Audiobook Playlist!)

Curated by Jen Moyers (@jen.loves.books)

Today, I'm sharing five reviews of books related to pop culture. As a tv and movie junkie, I'm always looking for new ways to think about the media I love, to get behind-the-scenes info that will illuminate works of art that are inspiring or compelling or just plain fun. Bonus: Many of these are audiobooks read by the author, which offers extra resonance!

For each book, I'll share an excerpt from our full review. All of these reviews were written by us, and you can click the links to dive deeper into each book. If you decide to purchase any of the books, our affiliate links to Bookshop.org and Libro.fm are in the full reviews. We earn a small commission if you shop through those links, and we truly appreciate your support!

Okay, on with the books!

"Through it all, Sookfong Lee uses pop culture as a way to escape, as a way to understand herself in the moment, and as a tool for reflection. It's a refuge, but an incomplete one since it's quite difficult for her to contend with the absence of representation.

"Superfan is a powerful book for those who love pop culture in general or art or literature or music. It's an intensely personal memoir, a more universal discussion of the role of art in all of our lives, and a book that asks tough questions about what we should expect of the pop culture (and just the culture!) that we consume." "Oh, man. I cannot tell you how much I adored this book. It was entertaining and hilarious. Rogen has a gift for telling really hilarious stories. I listened to the audiobook, which Rogen reads, but also has a FULL cast of voice work. When he quotes a celebrity, THAT CELEBRITY ACTUALLY READS THE LINE. What?!?! So, if he quotes Snoop Dogg, Snoop Dogg reads that quote in the audiobook. Perfection! (And you know I will bang my drum for a celebrity memoir every single time!)" "If you listen to the pod, you know I adore food books–cookbooks, food fiction, food memoirs. You name the food book, and I’ll put it on my TBR list immediately. When I heard Stanley Tucci wrote a memoir, I was very interested. I think he is an incredible character actor, and just a true delight. When I heard his memoir was food-centered, I pushed all my chips in. I couldn’t wait to get it into my hands (well, ears…whatever.). I decided to read the audiobook since Tucci reads it, and I cannot resist a memoir read by the author." Click to read the full review; you can read my review here.

"I have loved Busy Philipps for a long time. Although, I wasn’t an early adopter of Freaks & Geeks, I was a HUGE fan of Dawson’s Creek, and when Busy Philipps burst onto the scene as Audrey–I loved her. She spiced up the show in just the right way. After Dawson’s ended, (and just a side note, Audrey should totally have been in the series finale–I can’t even…) I have to admit I lost track of Busy’s career, but was always interested when I saw her in US Weekly or People. (In case you didn’t know—I LOVE celebrity news and gossip. Can’t help it. Won’t apologize.)" Click to read the full review.

"Omg. This book came at THE most perfect time for me. Both Jen and Ashley have talked about Lindy West's work on the podcast and in our bookish off-mic conversations, but I have never read one of her books.

"Shit, Actually, has made me a forever fan. First, Lindy West is not afraid to tell it like it is. She doesn't care if she offends you (or me) or if you don't agree with her. And I. Am. Here. For. It." Click to read the full review; here's my review.
