I just devoured Jenny Bayliss’s new book, A Season for Second Chances. (Libro.fm | Bookshop.org) I cannot tell you how much I adored this book. Last year, I reviewed Bayliss’s holiday romance, The Twelve Dates of Christmas, for the blog (see that here), and I really enjoyed that one too.
In A Season for Second Chances, Annie Sharpe, a successful chef and restaurateur, finds her adulterous husband in a compromising position with one of the staff from the restaurant they run together. This isn’t the first time he has cheated, but it is the first time she has walked in on him with another woman, and it is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
So, in an effort to escape and clear her head, Annie answers an advertisement seeking a guardian for a property at the shore for the winter months. What ensues is Annie’s journey of finding herself again and maybe, just maybe, learning to love again.
I just loved this story so much. Annie is such a great character–I love that she is in her 40s and still trying to figure things out (Ahem–relatable for me!). My very favorite aspect of this book is the cast of amazing secondary characters in Willow Bay, the small town Annie escapes to after her husband’s last round of infidelity. My very favorite character is Maeve, the elderly, but sexually awakened, woman who takes Annie under her wing. Hilarity and awkward moments abound.
I think you will love this book if you need a funny, romantic book about family, friendship, community, love, and the miracle of second chances. Jenny Bayliss has become, as Jen often says on the pod, an auto-buy author for me. Her particular style of writing and brand of humor, hits all the right notes for me. A Season for Second Chances was just what I needed here at the beginning of the year. Also note, the audio is absolutely fantastic. I hope you will give it a go!
